View RecordsSyracuse arrest research moves through separate police, custody, and court records, so the right source depends on which stage you need to confirm.
For a Syracuse arrest, start with the agency and record stage you need: Syracuse Police for police records, Onondaga County Sheriff for current county custody information, and Syracuse City Court or the appropriate court for the filed case. Arrest, custody, and disposition are separate records.
Syracuse Police records describe agency activity, the Onondaga County Sheriff custody system describes jail status, and the court record describes the filed case. A person can therefore have a police or booking record without the custody page telling you the final outcome. When the outcome matters, use the court case and disposition rather than extending the meaning of the arrest record.
Time also matters. An inmate lookup is designed around current custody and can change as people are released or transferred. A police record request may take a different route through city FOIL procedures. Keep the timestamp and source with each result, compare names and dates carefully, and treat the court disposition as the place to determine how a filed criminal case concluded.
| Record | Official route | What it answers |
|---|---|---|
| Police report/agency record | Syracuse Police / city FOIL route | Agency-created incident or police record subject to access rules |
| Current county custody | Onondaga County Sheriff inmate lookup | Current custody information |
| Court case | Syracuse City Court / appropriate New York court | Filed case, docket, and disposition information available from the court |
For a historical Syracuse police incident or arrest record, open the city FOIL page and use its online request link or download the FOIL Request Form. Describe the police record sought; include the name, approximate incident/arrest date, location and report number if known to help identify it. Send the completed form to [email protected], or mail or hand-deliver it to the Law Department, 233 East Washington Street, Suite 300, Syracuse, NY 13202. Paper copies cost $0.25 per page. Request access to existing records; submission does not mean every record will be released. Keep the request and response with your research notes rather than treating a current-custody search as a historical arrest search.
Names alone are not enough to connect an incident report, inmate entry, and criminal case. Compare arrest date, agency, date of birth or other permitted identifiers, charge information, and case number when available. If the match remains uncertain, report the records separately. This is especially important for common names and for historical arrest research where a current inmate search may no longer show the person.
